Feeling Adventurous

So here%26#39;s the thing- I no so little about Malaysia. I am graduating from law school in the US this summer, and to celebrate my husband and I are going to the Maldives for two weeks in August. We have a two full day stopover in Singapore (we arrive on Friday night, and don%26#39;t leave until 10 pm on Sunday evening). Up until now, we were planning on just staying at the Ritz Carlton and walking around Singapore for a few days.

But recently I started thinking about Malaysia, and I reallllllllly want to do it. I think we could, but is this just me being optimistic? I know we could barely touch the surface, and I know it would make more sense to fight off jetlag and just relax in Singapore. But we are going to do nothing but relax in Maldives. How feasible is it to rent a car, or even rent a driver, and go see something in Malaysia?

And for those of you who don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s crazy... can you give me some ideas? Anything memorable? Driving routes? A mountain, a beach, a village?

Thanks for your help- this is why I love TA- I%26#39;m just entering into your forum, having never been on it before, and I trust that someone out there will jump in and help me out as I%26#39;ve done for people on mine before. Thanks for broadening my horizons, in advance.

HI

you really don%26#39;t know much about Malaysia do you, LOL. Its a large country and whizzing round for 2 days will be a bit daft, the best beaches and mountains will require a flight from Singapore, and why do the beaches when you are going to the Maldives. Driving will waste a lot of time and requrie you to cross the boarder from Singapore to Malaysia. Why waste you 2 days, why not just do Singpore.

There is plenty to do in the city country of Singpore - Sentosa, shopping, food, Chinatown, Little India, Bird Park to name a few.

have fun, and keep real.

I must agree with the good solid advice given by Mitch.

Bottom line is that you do not have enough time.....

Arrive Friday night - check into u%26#39;r hotel and get some rest.

Leave Sunday Night at 10pm - means you must be in Changi airport for 6pm.

The above only gives you 1 full day, 1 night and 1 part day to %26#39;see%26#39; Malaysia.

To leave Singapore and visit just one worth while destination, Melaka for example, is a 5 hour journey each way by express bus.

Stay in Singapore and enjoy your time there - visit Chinatown, Little India and Arab Street to get a feel for region.

There is lots to see and do in Singapore - depends on your interests and tastes. Fort Canning Park and the Battle Box? Changi Museum? Chinese %26amp; Japanese Gardens? Cable car to Sentosa Island for good views of the city? Skip a visit to the islands attractions as they can be found anywhere in the world. How about Saturday night dinner in the East Coast Park Seafood Center?

Thank you both for your responses... You confirm what I was afraid I would hear, and what I know we probably should do. It%26#39;s not that I%26#39;m against seeing Singapore at all. I got nostalgic last night thinking about a trip to Europe where we had only a few days in France and drove down a patch of countryside. That was such a special trip- quick, but we made the most of what we had and, and although we certainly didn%26#39;t see all of France, we experienced it in a special way.

But, if you%26#39;re saying we should stay in Singapore, I believe you!

Ahh, but France%26#39;s countryside is so different from Malaysia countryside, esp if you drive through the southern part of peninsula malaysia, you will only see oil palm and rubber estates. Stick to Singapore; lots to do! Get on the Hop On HOp off Bus at Suntec City (they give discounts if you show them your Singapore Airlines boarding pass); go up the Singapore Flyer; go on a Duck Tour. Head downstairs Suntec Tower 3 to the fountain of wealth. For the most spectacular views of the city and a memorable dinner; head down to Empress Place and book at table at Indochine Waterfront or Siam Reap II at the Asian Civilization Museum. Take a boat tour down Singapore River; (the merlion is under repair since it got struck by lightning). Head to Lau Pa Sat Market (raffle place mrt) for local food like grilled stingray and satay,; Head to the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel for a Singapore Sling; walk around city Hall and visit CHJIMES (also very happening bars downstairs), St Andrews, Victoria theater; Padang; Supreme Court Building (this is where our Law Grads head to for their convocation pictures; so you might catch some of them in their academic gown); Parliment House.

Shopping - Orchard, Scotts Road. You have more than enough choices of shopping malls; my favourites are Takashimaya, Tangs, Paragon and Centrepoint. Visit the botanical gardens on the way and learn about all the species of orchids! For cheap stuff/shopping, head to Chinatown.

Sentosa (nearest mrt Harbourfront) - nothing like Maldives; but you can visit the Butterfly park, Vivo City (largest shopping mall in Singapore), Siloso Beach , Underwater World.

If you still have time - Singapore zoo and Night safari, Mandai Orchid Park.

Basically, Singapore is THE PLACE to pamper yourself!

Thanks! Sounds like fun!
