Penang with young chidren in May/June - Mozzys?

Hi

We are going Penang for 9 nights at the end of May with my children age 4 and 1. Is there alot of mosquitos, will I need alot of insect repellant for the children?

If so any recommendations on which one is mild enough for babies but does the job?

Hi

Mosquitos are not usually a problem in Penang. Although I have had the occasional bite, you really see them. I did not get any mozzie bites during our last visit in January.

As most mozzies are active at dusk / evening you may find that you are in the hotel room when they are active, so ensure that little ones are covered up then. You could also get a bug coil / mozzie plug from Boots to help reduce risks.

Boots do a great adult and children insect repellent. Ask that the pharmacy counter.

The strange food, sun and heat, with the risk of dehydration and sunburn being more of an issue to you as a parent than mozzie bites probaly will be. So make sure you have these covered as well.

Have a great time.

When i took my 6 month old last year i bought some wrist or ankle straps from mothercare - they are suppose to last 2 weeks each one.

It wasnt untill about 2 weeks on and son had this blue thing hanging off his leg every night that i read the packaging and it is not suppose to be on children who are under 2 or 3

But to be honest it did not irritate him in anyway i put it around his ankle and he was fine he also did not have any bites but then again i didnt use one for the last week just because i forgot to put it on him and he never got bit.

If they eat marmite thats suppose to help as well.

We actually found one of the best ideas for a child friendly insect repellant in Penang.

When we first went ~ 2 years ago, our then 6 month old was massacred by mozzies onon our first night as we sat out in the pool area having drinks at dusk. She was asleep in the pram with a cover over it.

We went to a pharmacy the next day and found some ';Anti Mosquito Patches'; -they are a blue spot that releases citronella oil. You can stick it onto clothes, the pram, the cot at night. And no need to worry about safety of insect repellant on their skin. We had no more problems after that.

The only place that I have seen them is in Malaysia and Singapore. We certainly haven%26#39;t been able to buy them in Australia. We brought a number of packets back with us because they are so useful -we have a lot of mozzies where we live and I don%26#39;t like the thought of having to put insect repellant on the little one%26#39;s skin very often and it is certainly not recommended for young babies.
