Advice for stopover in KL in April

After a long flight from the UK in April, I%26#39;ll be stopping over in KL in April for two nights (Frid evening to Sunday evening). Mum and two young teenage daughters, staying in Sunway Hotel. Any tips/advice gratefully accepted. Daughters desperate for shopping bargains and I%26#39;d like to know how easy and safe it is to get around and have no idea how jet lagged we%26#39;ll be.

Advice for stopover in KL in April

Hi

you are staying a bit out of the main part of the city at Sunway.

Sunway does have its own theme park which is why it is popular and it has its own mall, Sunway Pyramid, with all the normal shops.

You will need to travel 20mins or so by taxi to the city centre, and somewhere like the usual tourist haunts and shopping for cheap / replica stuff :

Petronas Towers / Suria KLCC Mall / Petrosains Discovery Centre / Kuala Lumpur City Centre park

Menara [KL] Tower 94m鈥?at the top of Bukit Nanas (Pineapple Hill), KL Menara Tower and the Bukit Nanas Park. The tower gives fantastic panoramic views all over KL.

Bukit Bintang 鈥?A great place for shopping and eating. Sungai Wang/BB Plaza [500 shops and a real Malaysian treat of all sorts of bargains hidden away], KL Plaza, Times Square [which also has a theme park], Pavillion [Mid to top end shops and also the best food court which is reasonably priced, very good mix of restaurants plus a supermarket], Lot 10 [also has a supermarket], Starhill Gallery [very top end but some very nice reasonably priced restaurants], Plaza Low Yat [IT mall], YTL Plaza, BB Park, Imbi Plaza for shopping, plus there are many open fronted shops which offer some great bargains and are identical to those in Chinatown and then there is Jalan Alor is a great place for street food and many restaurants along Bukit Bintang. Ain Arabia or Arab Street is just around the corner in Jalan Berangan, the shopping haven and food and culture of the Arabs in Malaysia. No end to the variety at Bukit Bintang.

Chinatown / Petaling Street / night market / street food / Sri Mahamariamman Temple plus other temples / UDA Ocean traditional Chinese shopping mall junction between Jalan Sultan and Jalan Dato H S Lee.

Have a great trip

Advice for stopover in KL in April

Thanks for your info. I had no idea how far out we were as travel agent led me to believe I was in the heart of it all. Shopping is something my daughters very keen to do but I%26#39;m a bit unsure about traveling around in taxis etc and not too keen on traveling around to night markets. Thanks for the heads up.

Hi

Why not see if you can change to a hotel in Bukit Bintang if shopping is what ou are there for. Your travel agent has sold you a pup, as it not in the heart of things - the travel agent probaly only sees their commission!! You will not have the choice of shops and products if you just stay at the Sunway Pyrimid, but your daughters might just love it there.

Night markets are easy, and fun, and in Chinatown - its also open and less crowded during the day. Taxis are ok, especially if you find one you like, get their number and they will happily take you around here and there.

Thanks so much for all your info. I%26#39;ve read through a few posts about taxis and hailing one on the move and making sure the meter works. How much roughly should I expect to pay for a taxi to these shopping areas from Sunway? I was also thinking about using public transport and getting a feel for the place but again, safely. I%26#39;m just a bit concerned about traveling around as its just me and the girls and I%26#39;ve never been to Malaysia before. You are right about the Theme park; my daughters would love it buts its a matter of juggling as the youngest one wants the theme park and the older one wants the shopping (me as well to be honest) but arriving Sat late evening and checking out of hotel on the Sunday, doesn%26#39;t leave much time plus we%26#39;ll probably be tired. Any advice gratefully received.

sorry meant Friday late evening

Public transport is very, very easy and very, very safe in KL, also very cheap compared to taxi fares.

Still if you are going to only go once, then a fare of around 40myr will not break the bank.

If you like authentic local food, go also to the night hawkers along Jalan Imbi road. You sit at a table and order what you like from the various hawkers. Excellent food and a great way to get to know the locals and the country%26#39;s food.

Thanks for all the advice. So everything is pretty safe then? It%26#39;s just reading some other posts, it paints a bit of a different picture.

HI

Is KL safe?

It%26#39;s a safe as any city. If you flaunt your riches and luxuries then you might be asking for trouble, but be sensible and it will not be a problem.

There will always be oportunists, pick pockets, bag snatchers etc if you give them the opportunity, but this applies to every large city or small town in the world.

Do not be paranoid about it, just be sensible.

I would happily walk around KL by myself. I am not a big butch bloke either, just small petite middle aged female!

Have fun!!

Thank you for your advice, its much appreciated and has given me some peace of mind!

Cheers
