It%26#39;s a long drive..

Most Singaporeans armed themselves with Garmin GPS when driving in Malaysia. Do you have one? What is the suggested route?

As far as I know (though have not driven from Singapore to Kuala Terengganu), there are two routes:-

1. coastal route: from Tuas checkpoint, head towards Kota Tinggi/Desaru, then follow Malaysia Federal Road Route 3.

2. expressway: North-South Expressway till Kuala Lumpur. From KL, Karak Highway (E8), follow by East Coast Highway (E8) towards Kuantan. And from there, Coastal Route 3.

Here is your best route%26gt;

Tuas checkpoint - continue towards Pulai- pass Tampoi- Head north along Jalan Kota Tinggi to kota Tinggi - continue north along Federal route 3 to mersing after bandar kota tinggi - continue past Mersing - continue past Rompin - Pekan - Kuantan - (stay on coastal route 3 to get to Kuala Terengganu or take inner land road 14 to KT). Coastal route will nicer from the views.

Total driving time without stopping - 7hours +

My advice : take a coach. There are plenty of coaches going from Singapore to KT; some even have packages with the hotels (Laguna Redang is very popular with Singaporeans whereas Berjaya has mainly Caucasian guests). Look here for coach tickets (departing from Grand central hotel orchard or chinatown):

That way, you save megabucks on highway tolls, petrol, less risk of accidents, less problems with parking etc.

many thanks to all of you.

We plan to go from tuas check point, then NS highway, turn from Jalan Batu Pahat and towards Mersing. then the Route 3. Is this feasible?

Can lar, depends on you; but will take 1.5 hours longer than and 200km more than if you were to got to Senai-kota tinggi-mersing.

Where else do you intend to go to besides Redang?

Driving all the way from Singapore to Terengganu would probably worth the effort if you are going to stay a night or two in Kuala Terengganu or other town along the coast.

As Global traveller 2000 has advised, take a coach instead.

....';That way, you save megabucks on highway tolls, petrol, less risk of accidents, less problems with parking etc.';....

In addition to that, definately less tiring as you could rest or get some sleep on the coach.

I%26#39;ve taken Transnational Express Bus from Lavender bus terminal to Kuala Terengganu before. Departed at 9pm, arrived KT at 7.30am, feeling fresh and energetic, ever ready to start touring around town.

I am not trying to discourage you from driving; but it just doesn%26#39;t make sense with 3 adults and 2 kids. Many Singaporeans I know are not experienced in driving ';malaysian style'; esp in JB or in the cities like KL and Kuala Terengganu and they often get into minor accidents and their car often get stolen. In case something like this happens to you like someone purposely banging on your car so you would stop and they could rob you or if your car gets stolen from the parking lot after you come back from Redang; it is going to cost more trouble and money than taking the bus in the first place. ESPECIALLY with two kids and Singaporean Number plate - I would avoid driving at all costs. Many other stories involving Singaporean number plate cars:

- traffic police stopping you for no reason to ask for Duit Kopi or simply issuing samans;

- hijack cars like Toyota Wish or other luxury cars;

- People/motocycles or other cars purposely bang into your car and they say its your fault and you have to pay them (preferably in SGD) for the damages; if not, they will bring a few kakis and hit you;

- People park next to your car and there is scratch on their car; they will say you caused it and demand for Sing dollars in payment;

- people see your numberplate and suddenly parking costs is double or triple;

- Some petty thieves will break open and steal your navigation system, radio, small cash, ERP machine, cashcard etc etc to sell and get money;

Please note you will be driving through many kampungs and villages where gangs and village head has got more power than the local policemen. Not to mention there will be many desolated stretches in johor where there is not many traffic. Anything can happen in these places; and as a rule; when something happens somewhere not in your country; you are always salah and the locals are always correct.

Hi, Traveller 2000 and AmiTeh

thank you for sharing.

I found both of you very adventurous, been to so many place, and often ';by yourself';. But seems that you have concern regarding driving in Malaysia.

My husband wanted to explore the east cost scenary, of course I do as well. It%26#39;s also quite common in China that we drive all the way for days.

We plan to stop by Charating and also another night at Terengganu before Redang. I could say we already decided to go, I am excited and a bit worried. My husband do not seem to see the risk, and we are not familiar with the roads..

Hope to get some help here

Thousand thanks

i also like to know, which way is easier for the driver, as I am not familiar with the road

Both you and your husband are adventurous too.

I%26#39;ll choose the via Kota Tinggi route. Do take note that Kota Tinggi is a flash flood area.

Do enjoy yourselves and have a safe trip.
