Shangri la Tanjung Aru- Airplane noise

Can anyone tell me if this resort is noisy? I see it is only 10 mins from the airport and on Google Maps it looks really close. Surely there would be lots of airplanes going over all the time? And is it relatively easy to get ';out'; the resort to eat out without resorting to taxis? Is there a resort shuttle? I also read about sea snakes and jelly fish. Does this mean i can%26#39;t go in the sea? We are going early June.

Many Thanks

Shangri la Tanjung Aru- Airplane noise

Hi

The airport is south east of the hotel. The planes land either north east / south west or south west / north east, they do not fly over STAR. Hotels in the town get more hassle from plane noise, and the Le Meridien has planes coming an going over the pool and the noise at the busy times can be a bit of a nuisance. Ok, you might expect some plane noise during the day, busy times seem to be early morning and early evening, but the planes will not be flying directly over the STAR. If you look at something like Gooogle Earth you will be able to see the situation of the hotel and the airport.

You will need a taxi to get to / from town.

Follow any advice from the hotel for any issues or problems with jelly fish or sea snakes that may be relevant at the time of your visit, but I think you are probaly worrying too much. We swam in the wonderfully warm sea and the only enconuter we had was with the many wonderful fishes over at the islands.

Have fun.

Shangri la Tanjung Aru- Airplane noise

There are aircraft noises, but its bearable.

BKT is a very busy airport, being the second busiest in Malaysia. Busiest time is actually during the evenings around 7pm-10pm, with take-offs/landings every 5min or so. Not sure whether all the flights fly over the Shangri-la Tg Aru, but only a handful actually fly past the Le Meridien in the downtown area.

If I am not wrong there are a couple of restaurants (and a spa) near the entrance to the resort. Further down the road past the clubs, there is a public beach (Pantai Tanjung Aru) with a ';singapore style'; hawker centre and several restaurants; be prepared for a long walk if you want to use this option.

Yes, SP, when at the Le Meridien earlier this year, we sat by the pool in the early evening as the planes flew directly over the hotel or just to one side over the water. It was almost as if the Le Meridien was the point at which they started or ended their take off / landing flight path into / out off the airport. Great for plane spotting.

If you look a the the photo on the Shangri-la website you can see the airport in the distance. Also the map on their site clearly shows the location of the airport. The planes will not cause you a problem, unless you are ultra sensitive.

Hi wangsbird, Tanjung Aru is tucked away in a part of town where there isn%26#39;t airplane traffic directly overhead so there isn%26#39;t much aircraft noise.

It%26#39;s relatively easy to get out - first there is a shuttle, but I%26#39;m not sure if it%26#39;s free and it probably runs on an hourly schedule.

Second, A 5 minute walk from the hotel there%26#39;s a Korean restaurant, 5 minutes from that is the KK Yacht Club and 5 minutes after that is the First Beach complex which has loads of hawker food, a Mediterranean restaurant, a seafood restaurant and a bar with live music and western food.

Everything after that is either a really long walk or a taxi away.

Sea snakes I%26#39;ve never really encounter either swimming or diving (!) in the sea, so they%26#39;re not much of a threat.

Jellyfish on the other hand occasionally occur, but when they%26#39;re a problem you will be warned. Because of previous Jellyfish incidents most beaches have lifeguards which are equipped to deal with stings.

While the Shangri-la Tanjung Aru is ';tuck away'; on land (its built on a peninsula), I do not think its actually ';tuck away'; in the air space from flight paths. Planes do fly past but I didnt think it was that bad especially when compared to the area around the main Tg Aru road / Jalan Mat Salleh junction.

Thanks everyone. Sorry about the paranoia about the jelly fish. We were in Queensland in Nov and it has made me weary of jellies in the sea :-)I think this sounds like a good place to go and am pleased there are a couple of places in walking distance.

Have stayed at the TA many times and never been aware of aeroplane noise.
