Tanjung Rhu Hotel - To be upgraded

A number of previous forum entries have referred to this hotel closing down for refurbishment and the construction of villas on the beach. I would like to try and put the record straight! I returned from the resort a day ago and during my stay had the opportunity to speak with some of the hotel Managers. First of all: the ownership of the hotel remains in Malaysian hands. It is not owned by a Russian or Russian Company as has been reported previously. The high occupancy period ends at the end of March and so it is planned that in April all the rooms in the hotel will be refurbished - block by block. (14 blocks). In addition the Sands restaurant will be, effectively knocked down to make way for a two storey restaurant. The lower level will provide similar food to its current fare. The upper floor will be a Japanese restaurant. The Saffron will also be refurbished anf the Rhu will be extended to give more dining space and will have a veranda. In addition there are to be 21 villas built along the beach. Some villas will be built across the access road to the hotel. The hotel will remain open whilst all this work is undertaken. Present estimates are that the whole work will be completed by the end of the current year.

Tanjung Rhu Hotel - To be upgraded

Dear Headcorntraveller,

thanks a lot for updating us with these details!

Eva

We%26#39;ve literally been home 3 hours, having left TR yesterday afternoon and would like to assure you it is in no way going to be ';a building site';. We spoke to 2 managers (one only yesterday) who told us of future plans, but it isn%26#39;t going to happen immediately. We were told the plans are to demolish the kitchen/bar area of the Sunset Pool (not Sands) and relocate it to the other side of the pool in order to make the rooms overlooking that side more peaceful - work will not start until after the high season. Refurbishment of rooms at present appears to be internal repainting - this causes no noise whatsoever. We were there from 22 Feb - 8 March in a beautiful Bayu Senja Seaview Room on the first floor and could not complain about a thing - one almost feels one is not staying in the same hotel as some of the previous reviewers on this site. There is also a plan to build villas but this is a long way from the main hotel and will be on the road to the hotel, well away from Sands. If you have any concerns, why not email the hotel and I know they will reassure you on this matter.

As a rider to the comments made by sunandbeachDorset, I stayed at Tanjung Rhu between 24th February and the 6th March and so our respective holidays overlapped. If we saw one another now, doubtless we would recognise one another. This year was the third year running we have stayed at the hotel. We have liked it so much we cannot stop ourselves returning! Therefore it has interested us, perhaps more than most as to just what the Hotel plans are. We were invited to the Hotels %26#39;evening drinks%26#39; party on the 2nd March and had the opportunity to speak with the %26#39;Project Manager%26#39;,Warner Ong and it was he who gave us a lot of information as to what was planned. We also spoke with the Outlet Manager of the Sands Restaurant, Samberi Ibrahim. It was they who told us that the Sands restaurant was to be made two storey. The second storey being a Japanese restaurant. Whilst we were there the hotel occupancy was just 49% full and it was expected that during %26#39;April%26#39; this would drop to 2%. Our mouths were agape at this last piece of information. Certainly the number of guests staying at the hotel were less than last year. I was not told about the other part of the Sands being changed. As for the villas, yes they will be positioned quite some distance from the main hotel and I would have thought that their construction will not be of any inconvenience to the hotel or its guests. A few years back some friends of ours stayed at the Hotel when they were building the Sands Pool. Despite its size and area and closeness to the Sands restaurant, they did not experience any reduction in their enjoyment of the Hotel. In my view it is a wonderful hotel and I do not hesitate in recommending it to anyone. I am sure that once the work starts any disruption to the hotel will be kept to a minimum. No specific start date has been given, but it has been planed to start in %26#39;April%26#39;. For what it is worth the work proposed was under discussion last year, and so I was expecting some work having been carried out by this year - but it was not to be. Thus the staff and indeed the Project Manager are expecting the work to start soon but they too are awaiting developments. Warner told me that they will be updating progress of the work on their website.
