car hire in KL and best way to get to the F1 GP ?

Hi all

I am about to embark on my honeymoon in a couple of weeks, starting in Langkawi and then on to KL.

We will be staying for 5 nights at the Carcosa Seri Negara and while on a visit we have tickets to the F1 GP, what is the best way to get there ? Also, I have read there is a lot of traffic, is it best to leave early ?

Also, I have been advised the track is near the airport, which is approx 50mins away in a car, so I guess it will be better to hire a car for our 5 nights rather than pay for taxis ? We would plan to do a day sightseeing aswell and play golf ?

Is there a relaible car hire company at the airport ? if so, how much should i expect to pay ?

Hopefully, someone may be able to help me with the above :-)

car hire in KL and best way to get to the F1 GP ?

Hi, my advice: don%26#39;t hire a car. Leave the traffic congestion and driving directions to the cab driver; KL city is not a good place to get stuck in during rush hours and flashfloods.

The Carcosa is quite close to KL Sentral; so you might consider taking the train (KLIA Transit or Express) to the airport and then the shuttle bus from the airport (go downstairs to the bus terminal) to the F1 course. KLIA Transit is having some promotional rates and packages for the three days during F1. You will need to get a cab from the Carcosa to KL Sentral (under RM 5 if you take a metered city cab; and no; you can%26#39;t walk across Jalan Damansara and up KL Sentral although it looks close on a map). Look here for the promotional rates:

This would be the fastest way since you won%26#39;t have to go through any traffic jams out of the city, though a room at the Hilton or Le Meridien might be more convenient since you can just walk down to the station for the trains and its easy access from/to the airport/Sepang.

A more economical way: Get a cab from the Carcosa to KL Sentral (again, since the Carcosa is pretty secluded from public transport); take the Skybus or RM15 to F1 Sepang. This will take longer depending on traffic. Here are the stops and the Skybus website:

www.skybus.com.my

Direct cab: Again, go to KL Sentral, buy a cab coupon (fixed price) to F1 race course (should be ard RM 80 per cab). They will bring you directly to where you want to go.

Sightseeing and golf: Head to the taxi row at KL Sentral (next to the pathway heading to the Hilton/Meridien). Many many many taxis pass through there and stop there to pick passengers up. Ask for a hourly booking and they will be glad to bring you around the city for RM 20 per hour (please don%26#39;t pay more; but you can tip him if you think he was a good tour guide). Taxi drivers will bring you to most interesting places around town and wait till you finish sightseeing or come back and pick you up again. The Hop on Hop off bus would be an option; but then it will take much more time than a cab driver because of traffic congestion and weather. Get a cab, if he is good and honest, keep his number and call him when you need him again.

A car rental will cost about RM 180 onwards per day no including road tolls, parking (very expensive at the circuit and airport) and petrol costs. No point being stuck for hours at Sepang after the races.

car hire in KL and best way to get to the F1 GP ?

Thanks for your informative reply, this is a great help thank you.

One last question...........obviously we have got to get to the carcosa from the airport, what is the best way, the hotel is quoting us a massive 250RM each way !!!

I assume a taxi or public transport ?

Also, I assume all public transport is safe ???!!!

Thanks again for your kind help :-)

There are two pricing system: Local city cab or Hotel foreigner cab. Obviously the hotel is much more expensive than buying a normal taxi coupon from the airport. Please check the prices here for the Airport Limo cabs:

Public transport is probably the fastest, safest and most practical way to get around the city. The problem with Carcosa - its rather secluded; not many city cabs go there and back; you will have to live with the 3 times more expensive hotel cabs for 5 days.; even if its for short journeys like from the hotel to KL Sentral station (they will most probably quote you RM 20-30 per way instead of RM 5). Get a nice cabbie, tell him to come pick you up from the hotel every time you need to go somewhere; the hotel won%26#39;t like it at all; but they won%26#39;t complain. Please print a map of the hotel and the address; MANY MANY cab drivers in KL do not know the Carcosa location well, esp at night; they will get lost around the area.

Hi EssexGroomy,

My advice is to take a cab direct from KLIA to your hotel. Cost per cab is around RM80. Get your cab coupon at the airport.

The public transport is safe.

Thanks for your kind help, this will be a big help while we are in KL !

Just an aside, as a regular visitor to the KL GP (5 times now) I%26#39;d just add a few things .....

Definately avoid car transport anywhere near Sepang. I have caught the train from the KL Station to Airport and then they lay on special transit buses which are really easy. You can also leave luggage at KLIA landside there is a luggage deposit thing.

Id also recommend travelling light to the race, you will need hats, sunglasses, suncream and little else, also make sure you pick up the earplugs ! Its a fantatsic venue, it will make every other race circuit you have ever visited, look rubbish !

Food and drink is easy to get, there is a huge open erea with food/drink outlets in the middle, basic stuff but all eatable and the beers cold !

Recently the race hasnt been sold out, so its quite easy to move around and watch part of the race from different view points.

If you are into your F1, you chosen the right place. I think the race is starting a little later in the day which might make it a little cooler (ha ha) but drink plenty of water, as humidity if fierce.

I shall be jumping on a plane in about 12 days to watch the race too, so enjoy !!

Do not hire a car, it is not good way.
