Just a thought. Do hotels allow non-guests to use their swimming pools? I know you can sometimes pay to use resort pools. Contemplating staying at a cheap backpackers for our first night as we are will be flying out to Sandakan early the next morning. Would be nice to think that we could have the option of a pool if we feel we really need it!

It%26#39;s not normal to allow non-guest to use the pools in Malaysian hotels, unless it was part of a day trip. In may hotels you either sign for towels along with a room number or will be asked a room number.
You could ask if they allow day guests.
