Is there transport from Taiping/Ipoh to Cameron Highlands?

My family (group of 8) will be visitng relatives in Taiping. We will be taking the train from Singapore to Ipoh, then bus from Ipoh to Taiping.

Heard that Ipoh/Taiping is not too far from Cameron Highlands. Can anyone suggest how we can get to/fro Cameron Highlands from either IPoh or Taiping?

Thanks!

Is there transport from Taiping/Ipoh to Cameron Highlands?

Take a bus from Ipoh (the buses are not well maintained and slow; but they work). You can either catch on from Medan Gopeng (tell them its along Jalan Gopeng (in chinese Mou-Pin Lou) opposite the Ipoh Swimming Club/Sam poh tong cave temples) OR a bus with Kinta Omnibus (not recommended) that leaves from Medan Kidd, the old bus station of Ipoh on the way to Silibin and Menglembu.

Journey takes 4 hours from Ipoh. You can also rent a car from Ipoh and drive since its faster and more convenient than taking a bus and taxi all around. rent a car for RM 150 a day; drive up the Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands route. Driving in CH is very simple; there is only one main road up there. Here is a bus schedule; but please call to book and confirm the times with the bus company directly.

You can also try visiting the Lost World of Tambun Theme park in Tambun(www.sunwaylostworldoftambun.com), and Pulau Pangkor (under one hour from Taiping to Lumut and another hour with the ferry).

Oh, did not realise Pangkor is that near. Sounds more attractive since it is less than CH%26#39;s 4 hrs travel.

Just to clarify, if we were to rent a car (looks like an MPV is needed to fit us all) from Taiping to CH, roughly what is the travel time?

Kindly suggest how we can het from Taiping to Lumut. Are they budget accommodation on Pangkor? Keeping all our options open at the moment.

Thank you

or you can just rent two cars. When my relatives come up from Singapore; they drive up with their own car and I will just lead them up to Cameron Highlands with my car and they will follow on the back. No problems since you can absolutely not get lost on one straight road. Driver is going to cost more; because they need to pick you up from Taiping.

IF you want to drive, get a good map of the area first. Like this one:

(you can%26#39;t see the Simpang Pulai-Blue valley road on this map)

To drive to Cameron Highlands will take you about one hour from your house in Taiping to the Simpang Pulai toll plaza exit; then another 1.5hours to get to Brinchang from the toll plaza; turn right after paying toll; keep right; at the next traffic light turn right and you are going up. I would say 2,5-3 hours depending on how many stops you make along the way. Here are the instructions

To drive to Lumut; its one straight road down through Simpang and Lumut. If you like dried fish snacks and other fish products like crackers and cincalok; Lumut is the place for buying all these stuff cheaply. 1.5 by car to Lumut; please note the land road has a max speed limit of 90km/h and there are plenty of policemen taking measurements along that road.

I am certain there are buses running from Taiping to LUmut daily; please go to the bus station to ask around. From Lumut bus station; walk to the ferry terminal opposite and catch the ferry over. Here is a guide on getting there as well as a list of hotels. MOst budget travelers prefer to stay along Teluk Nipah:

Thing is; people usually need a car to go around Perak where public transport is non-existent. Rent a car is much cheaper and convenient.

Thank you very much for the excellent information, Global Traveller 2000.

After reading the info, I am more inclined towards the Pangkor side trip over Cameron as the travelling time is shorter, hence less tiring for the young and old ones in my group.

Based on the information you provided, we will probably go to Lumut by bus from Taiping Bus Station, and take the ferry across to Pangkor.

For the return, we will take the bus from Lumut to Ipoh, where we are catching the return train home to Singapore.

Thanks so much again! You%26#39;ve been a great help.
