Transport in Kota Kinabalu

Friends of mine are travelling to Kota Kinabalu in April.

They have received prices for taxi as follows:

Trip 1 - transport from Airport to LeMeridan and return to Airport a few days later (price is 150 myr or 70 myr in a sedan)

Trip 2 - transport from LeMeridan to base of mountain and return after climb (price is 250 myr)Trip 3 - shown around KK for 4 hours (price is 120 myr)or 8 hours (200 myr)

We also have had a price for taxi - pick up from airport to Mercure, pick up in morning to markets, pickup from markets back to Mercure and return to airport (total price is 150 myr)

Whilst we understand that it may be a bit cheaper to negotiate while we are there - we are limited for time so am wondering whether or not the price is a little bit over or we are getting ripped off. Would love to know what forumites think.

Thanks

Hi Cballans

Trip 1 - if it%26#39;s per person, is a sure rip-off. If it%26#39;s per vehicle, then it%26#39;s almost a rip-off.

A taxi (sedan) from the airport to Le Meridien (in town, about 15 mins from the airport), will cost RM25 one-way for up to 4 people.

Trip 2 - you can rent a long distance taxi from behind the library in KK for about RM250 one-way for up to 4 people to the mountain. Normally what people do is wait until the taxi fills up and then share the cost. Down side is, coming back it%26#39;s not so easy to get a taxi - but the upside is there are mini-busses and long distances buses passing Mt. Kinabalu HQ - so you can get back for less than RM30 per person. If that quote was per person, it%26#39;s a serious rip-off.

Trip 3 - that%26#39;s suspiciously reasonable, even if it is per person. That said, what does the tour include and how much driving is involved and what else will they be expected to pay for? KK is not huge. But Mt. Kinabalu is at least 2 hours away, so it depends on what you%26#39;re going to be doing for 4 hours.

The Mercure pick-up option is also not horrible, but again, it depends on if the price is per person and how many people you are. You can probably still do it cheaper if it%26#39;s just taxis all the way - and on this route, taxis are in ample supply.

There%26#39;s a shuttle that runs between 1Borneo and the City - and it%26#39;s free. Not so reliable, but free.

Thanks for your reply - the prices quoted is per car not per person
