Best Beaches near KK town

My wife and I are visiting KK in April and wanted to know if there was a good beaches near to the city as we%26#39;re stying at Le Meridien Hotel.

I%26#39;ve read about the great islands that we can visit (which we will) but was wondering if there were any nice local easily acessible beaches as an alternative and which ones you would recommend?

judging solely on photos posted online, it seems the beaches on KK are really incomparable to the ones the islands like manukan offer. i know there%26#39;s a beach near shangrila rasa ria and another in tanjung aru.

Le Meridien is a great hotel, well located in KK right opposite the night market for really cheap food. You can see the islands from the LM. You can get their via tours, or find a boat that will take you over and bring your back - best bet is to get to Jesselton Point. All the islands Manukan, Mamutik, Sapi, Sulug and Gaya of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park

or TARP are wonderful and all only 10 - 20 minute speedboat ride from Jesselton Point.

The islands are the nearest beaches to Le Meridien and KK. There is a really nice beach at Shangri-la Rasa Ria and Nexus Resort but are open to residents and day guests only. The hotels in the town like Tanjung Aru do not have such nice beaches in comparison.

TravelGoonerLondon - Tanjung Aru%26#39;s First Beach, which is about 15 mins from Le Meridien, is a nice stretch of sand which is great for evening/sunset strolls (and frisbee).

However, it%26#39;s not really a lie-down-and-tan kind of beach, although you certainly can do that there. The sand is brownish.

For postcard white sandy beaches, Rasa Ria and Nexus both are about 40 minutes away. You can go and spend the day there.

I would recommend Rasa Ria, the beach is unbelievable and the bay is beautiful. There%26#39;s an orang utan sanctuary on the one end too.
