Hi

If you want to visit an Orang-Utan santuary, the better ones will require you to travel to the Malaysian part of Borneo. Its a 2-4 hour flight from Kuala Lumpur. Both Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia fly to Borneo.

There are 2 sanctuaries in Kota Kinabalu area, 1 at the 5* Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort 40mins from KK town. So you could look at the hotels in KK forum (left hand panel) to see what matches your budget and then book with the Rasa Ria to visit and get a taxi over. This is the cheaper option.

The other sanctuary is over at Sepilok near Sandakan. This is where the older orangs%26#39; are taken once they leave the sanctuary at the Rasa Ria. You will need to fly the 30mins from KK to Sandakan, or take a long 5 hour bus / taxi. There are several small resort hotels near Sepilok Sanctuary. Again, look at the hotels in Sandakan forum (left hand panel) to see what suits your budget.

There is also Orang-Utan Island near Penang, which is just off the west coast of the Peninsiular, and only takes a 30min flight from Kuala Lumpur. Bukit Merah Laketown Resort has a small tropical island is in the middle of the 7,000 acre freshwater lake where a number of orang utans are kept in their natural habitat (well, almost!). You can do this as a day trip from Penang, most taxi drivers are happy to agree a price for a days use.

Have fun.
