Hi again
I have read all the posts about tailoring and custom made clothes. We are staying in KL 2 nights on way to Oz and 2 nights 5 weeks later on way back. I would like a silk trouser suit with a matching long skirt - would it be possible to buy off the peg or better/cheaper to get one made? Would it be possible to order it on way out and collect on way back?
The outfit is for my daughter%26#39;s wedding in April in England. This forum is so helpful - thanks in advance.

Off the peg or custom made ladies suit.
If you want it tailor made there is no problem going in getting fitted and then picking up on your way back. There are numerous tailors in the Chinatown area which are cheap and very good. They will have a wide selection of surprisingly good fabrics.
The hotel people can also point you to some tailors but chances are they will be a bit more expensive than others in Malaysia (since its a 5* hotel they tend to recommend more expensive tailors). They will still be cheap by western standards though.
If you get a taxi drive who’s English is good you can also ask him to take you to a tailor. Often times the drivers are excellent sources of info and enjoy playing tour guide.
DISCLAIMER
The following is not intended to offend merely passing on some common troubles for shopping.
As far as buying off the rack it is possible and you will still get a nice price. Sometimes western women can have trouble finding enough nice outfits that fit properly though (casual clothes don’t seem to be as much of a problem). The outfits are cut for Asian women who of course tend to be slightly less busty/curvy and a bit shorter. My sister-in-law visited us in Malaysia and had a devil of a time finding clothes. She is 5’ 11” tall and couldn’t find any pants to fit her. They all looked like capri’s. :-P
The nicer malls may have things but the savings wont be as great as the other places.I f it were me I think I would choose to get one tailored.

I have two tailor%26#39;s in KL that are fantastic both in Sungei Wang Plaza near Bukit Bintang. They are Lester Wong and The Page. Lestor specalises in ladies wear and made me the most wonderful evening gown in pure silk. The Page has been making suits for my entire family men and ladies for several years and are very very nice people. They even once dropped a suit off at the airport for us to pick up when we were in transit. Both are very good and I think Page is cheaper when it comes to making suits and both places have a wide range of fabric choices. The entire shopping centre here was many other tailors if they do not suit you.
I am also interested in getting some clothes made. Is it posible to provide clothes that we like from home and get them copied in different fabrics? If so, any recommendations for places to go? We will be in KL for just 2.5 days. Thanks.
It is both Lester Wong and The Page have copied many things, it is actually cheaper for them to do this as they do not have to make a pattern.
Many thanks to 22003 and Carla. Looking forward to the experience. When I go to the tailor are the prices ';set'; or does one barter? Like all Brits bartering is a bit embarrassing for me!!
I%26#39;m going to KL for a week. If I ask them to tailor items for me from photos, would they be able to achive that it one week?
Many thanks,
Emy
Hi marsha,
I was in KL in October last year and had hoped to spend up on clothes. I am a tallish (5%26#39;9) size 12 (aussie) and came home 10k under my baggage allowance. I managed a few tops in Penang but almost nothing in KL.
I%26#39;d go for the tailor - chances of getting off the peg if you are bigger than size 10, taller than 5%26#39;7 or older than 25 could be slim. (excuse the pun!)
You will find some beautiful fabrics in KL - if you want silk - try the Euro Moda store - just divine! (but I didn%26#39;t buy - pretty expensive but for a mother of the bride - you can%26#39;t beat silk)
happy travels
Helen
