Places to stay in kota kinabalu

We are travelling to KK in July 2009 and have been given a few hotel options (shangra-la etc).

Can anyone recommend anywhere to stay that is more private or unique than the larger resort complexes? We%26#39;d love to be by the beach and explore the forests.

as far as i have researched, all the top quality hotels in KK are large-scale resorts near the waterfront. shangrila rasa ria is on a more secluded part of KK and has a decent beach but i%26#39;ve read that mostly families stay there.

maybe you can just get a suite in rasa ria for better privacy.

Whilst lots of families stay in the garden wing of the Shangri-la Rasa Ria, the Ocean wing is much more exclusive and whilst there are a few families staying in this beautiful wing, it is popular with couples. This hotel is on a beautiful stretch of beach and has an adjoining forest part of which is a orang-utan sanctuary. It never felt crowded or busy.
