Trip report - Nexus Resort, taxi fare, weather, etc.

Just got back from a 3D2N trip to KK and thought I%26#39;d share some info here. We touched down at 11.30am and got a taxi from the taxi counter (budget, not limo) for RM20. It was a short ride to town where we had lunch (local cuisine) at Centrepoint shopping centre. There%26#39;s also a supermarket at the basement level where all the food outlets are located and you can buy everything you need there. Prices are rather low except for items like sun-tanning lotion (for obvious reasons).

Next we flagged a cab at the taxi stand outside the shopping centre and negotiated the fare with the driver before we got in. He quoted RM70 for the 40-min drive to Nexus Resort but we bargained it down to RM55. We arrived at the resort and there was light rain but it cleared up after an hour. For the next 2 days, it was bright and sunny with light drizzle in the afternoon or evening. No biggie. Sunset was pretty nice from the beach!

Nexus Resort is huge. We got a room at the Ocean Wing, 5th level, and it was sea-facing. Room was incredible spacious and clean but some furniture was a tad old. By the way, we got good rates directly from the hotel itself. It was even cheaper than what was quoted on the hotel website. The beach is just infront of the resort/pool and it was clean. On the beach you could %26#39;walk out%26#39; quite a distance and the (fairly warm) water would still only be at your waist level.

Plenty of deckchairs around and the beach was nice and quiet. However, on Saturday and Sunday, the beach and pool got a bit more crowded as locals come to stay for the weekend. The pool was clean but I found it hard to swim in it as it was only 1m deep and it was of a free-form shape. It%26#39;s better to soak or walk around in it, if you ask me. At the end of the trip we realised we had several bite marks on our arms and legs. Not sure if they were from sandflies (I read somewhere that KK beaches are filled with them) or bed bugs.

The buffet breakfast was just average. We%26#39;ve had better ones. We didn%26#39;t go out to eat at all (read on to find out why). We just ordered ala carte from the coffee house. A Nasi Goreng or Nasi Lemak costs RM36++ each and a glass of draft beer was RM16++. Rather pricey! We also saw that the dinner buffet costs RM85++ per person. It%26#39;s probably better to eat elsewhere, if you have the time. 1Borneo is about 20mins away by taxi, while it%26#39;ll take 40 mins to get to town. You have to pay RM24 per person for a return trip via the hotel shuttle bus. Timing is available at the reception.

Do note that there is no in-house doctor. My partner got real ill and it took the doctor 1 hour to arrive due to distance and traffic. The nearest hospital is 20 mins away, claims the front desk staff, and they weren%26#39;t sure how long the ambulance would take to arrive. Anyway, the housecall + med cost us RM480 but good thing we have insurance. The resort knew my partner was ill as they were the ones who called for the doctor but never once did they check in on us. Not even when we were checking out and the front desk staff handed us the medical bill. Oh well. We gave feedback on this.

One more thing to note, if you%26#39;re flying Air Asia or Tiger Airways, it will fly in and out of Terminal 2. Our taxi driver was heading towards Terminal 1 until we told him we were going to Terminal 2 (we had forgotten to specify). During check in, we saw some people who were supposed to be at Terminal 1 (which is not too far away, maybe 10-15 mins by taxi, unless you are already running late!) and they had to quickly hop into a taxi.

Due to the short duration of our stay and my partner%26#39;s condition, we couldn%26#39;t go on any excursions to the islands or parks. We%26#39;ll do that next time. But we probably won%26#39;t stay so far away from town again.

Hope the above helps. Enjoy your holiday.
