What's happening with the weather?!

Hello All,

I%26#39;m posting to people already there!

We%26#39;re in England looking forward to coming to Langkawi in 2 weeks and the weather websites over here are predicting nothing but thunderstorms and rain for the forseeable future!

Is this accurate? Do we need to start planning for rainy days? :(

Hope someone can put our minds at ease a bit as it%26#39;s our honeymoon!

Cheers

Paul

What's happening with the weather?!

Hey Paul,

The truth is, it%26#39;s crazy hot during the day time and torrential tropical warm rain in the evening for an hour daily for the past 3 days. So, you%26#39;ll get the full tropical holiday package here. Pls stop worrying and start planning to hide yourself from the sun, warmth, humidity %26amp; heat.... Bring some snow over. We are bored with the everyday summer here...

Happy Honeymoon buddy!

What's happening with the weather?!

Phew!

So pleased with that. The wife was beginning to panic.

I%26#39;ll try and bring over a box of cool weather for you..... Not sure it%26#39;ll last the flight though!

Thanks very much.

Dear Sunbeam,

yesterday we had about 4 hours of rain, at least here in Kuah! During the last week we had some rain but not too much to spoil a holiday. Today started sunny and the weather looks promising but I am afraid, we are already in the transition period. That means, the wet season would start early this year.

But in any case: even during the rain you can do most of the tours. One of my very best experience here was the kayaking in Kilim during rain. We had big fun! Just take some dry clothes to change after wards.

Have a great time!

Eva

Weather must have just changed, last week every day real hot, a little cloud in the afternoon and occasional evening rain

Great place you will love it and the people. Anyway Honeymoon- rain- err could be a blessing

Best wishes guys and much happiness for the future to you both

Cheers

Dave

Hi Eva

I am quoting part of your earlier post:

';but I am afraid, we are already in the transition period. That means, the wet season would start early this year.';

Can you elaborate at all please?

We will be in Langkawi for a few days mid April with intent to get ferry across to Ko Lipe for a further few days then ferry again right up to Ko Lanta (Thailand).

Tigerline Travel shows ferries running daily on their website under their newly amended timetable.

Can you enlighten at all, given your extensive sailing experience and your quote (above) about early transition and wet season perhaps coming in sooner, what this means for ferry services and the sea in general (as in: does it mean HUGE waves etc).

I would really appreciate your advice, general as it may need to be, to work out should I be coming up with a PLAN B for us on how to get to Ko Lanta if weather is likely to be atrocious out at sea.

Thanking you very much in advance...

Cheers... :)

Dear Wishtago,

As much as I have information about the weather of Langkawi in general, the monsoon normally changes at about April. Then the rainy season starts very moderate with some short showers or quick thunderstorms.

During the last ten days we had some showers and - what is more important for those that want to go to Koh Lipe - the wind, especially yesterday - changed to the north! That is one of the reasons why the ferries normally only operate until April.

I would never ever opt to go on one of the smaller boats (See that we had an accident a few months back) only take the big ferries.

I have been to Koh Lipe a few weeks back (never had a foot on land though) and on our way back we had waves up to 3 meters. It was fantastic as we where with a 75 meter !! yacht out there but with a small vessel it would have been a nightmare.

Today the weather is fine again and in general I would say we have a 50 % chance for a daily rainy period of about maybe one or two hours, mainly in the afternoon.

In general Langkawi is much drier than Thailand or the mainland. Let alone last year I permanently compared our weather to KL and we had - I would say - at least 50% less rain!

To me personally this period is just great! Already lots of trees are blossoming, it is not too hot and after a downpour I love to see the mist coming up the mountains.

One more important thing and this is one of the reasons why we have made this island our new home: even during the rainy season and even during a thunderstorm coming with wind up to 50 knots in gusts, we NEVER have high waves in certain areas of Langkawi (this is not true for Telaga and the northern coastline)

But this indicates that all boat tours in the south and south west of the archipelago can be done all year around.

Fazit: To see the real beauty of Langkawi, never miss out to go on a boat trip. For all budgets operators can take you out.

If you have more questions, please come back.

Eva

Uff, that was my longest post and I hope I did not bore you!

Have fun on our 99 mystic islands and the sun, the wind and rain!

Eva

Thank you so much Eva.

Brilliant reply... and great advice is NEVER too long and NEVER boring (to me...) :)

Air Asia has good specials on getting back from Langkawi to KL then KL to Krabi in Thailand so I am thinking perhaps we consider a %26#39;flying%26#39; Plan B in case the seas are too rough for adventuring to Ko Lipe (it is one thing to be on a large ferry for an hour or so in 3m swells... it is another thing alltogether having to do it for 6 hrs from Ko Lipe to Ko Lanta).

I was on a large ferry once between Phi Phi and Ao Nang and the swells were well over 3 metres and it was one of the most horrific experiences of my life. They kept stalling (or thats how it appeared) the motor and %26#39;riding%26#39; it out then chugging along again and then repeating this over and over. We nearly lost a young girl on the boat to going overboard and it was only the quick thinking and lunging of my hubby, her dad and another man that saved her.

I never want to go through that again.

So.. if the weather is not kind to us re: Lipe we could still possibly get out on your yacht, or with another operator etc, to see some other islands around Langkawi instead? If this eventuated we would add a couple more days to the Langkawi leg of our trip instead of the time intended to be spent at Lipe.

THANX HEAPS EVA!

Cheers... :)

Wait a second, I gave false information. I will come back with a correction in a few minutes.

Eva

Hi all

So the weather looks really unsettled according to various weather websites !

We are due to the island on the 24th of this month for 10 night stay at the datai, is the rain meant to continue for a while ?

Also, is there a pattern to the rain/thunderstorms, do they come in afternoon/evening, and how long are they for, will it be on/off throughout the day ??

In all honesty we was expected some rain but it looks like it could ruin the honeymoon, what you think ?

Also, planning on golf aswell, would it be best to play in the morning ?

Hi Eva

It seems as though you%26#39;ve become the local weather forecaster! I%26#39;m planning a trip the last week of May... seems so much conflicting info on the weather...can you enlighten me?! I know it will be warm, and I don%26#39;t mind the odd heavy downpour, but is it likely to rain constantly... or be mostly grey (I%26#39;ve had enough grey cloud here in UK, to last me a lifetime!
