Hi there,
the long weekend is almost over and we took the opportunity to travel the country. My first idea was KL-Malacca-Kuantan-KL, but my colleagues suggested that this journey would take too long for only 2-3 days (we took Plusliner bus!).
Only Kuantan then. The city itself is completely boring. To be honest, we were the only foreigners (caucasians) that walked the streets there. All the others ones were staying in the hotel. Therefore almost everyone was staring at us, which is an experience I don%26#39;t have that much in KL (there the stares are shorter ;)
I missed something like Jalan Alor, where we could just go to and enjoy nice food.
Anyway, the beach was so-so. Not bad, but nothing to write home about.
Now a question: is it possible to go to one of the islands (closest ones to KL) for just one day? From KL, I mean. Going there in the morning, returning in the evening?
Kuantan trip report + question reg. island daytrip from KL
Kuantan is a small chinese town; nothing much. For white sandy beaches, you have to head to Perhentians or Redang; but its too far for a one day journey from KL. Your best bet for a one day trip is probably Pangkor Island. Take a bus or rent a car from KL, drive to Lumur (3.5 hours), take the ferry over to Pangkor.
Or you can catch the Earliest express train at 5:30 from KL Sentral to Ipoh (arrival 8:30am); then sightsee the cave temples or take a cab to Lumut (one hour with the Menglembu-Lumut highway). When you exit the train station, turn right and walk to the Medan Kidd terminal station - behind the Post office and roundabout. You will see many outstation cabs there and ask them to take you to Lumut (80km). You might need to pay about RM 100 to Lumut, please bargain with them since you look caucasian, they will try to pull the price up. You will be in Lumut around 10am if you leave Ipoh train station at 9am, take any ferry to Pangkor. Here is some info about Pangkor and the nicest beaches there:

Buy your train tickets at www.ktmb.com.my. The good thing about the train is that it has frequent schedules from Ipoh/KL and it leaves much earlier than many buses.
You can also take a direct bus from KL To Lumut; but please check the times with Plusliner.

p.s. you won%26#39;t get stared in Ipoh as much as in Kuantan! unless you run around looking like Nina Hagen.
Nina Hagen? GT2000, you could easily be an expert for Germany as well ;)
Well, my family is coming in early April. So I thought spending a day on an island, but I guess the best way is to fly into Langkawi, spend a night there, enjoy the beach and head back to KL the next day. Train or Bus is just too much of a hassle or too early.
As always, thanks GT2000!
Ahh, Osterferien... contact Eva (her screename is
Danielschaller) if you need help regarding Langkawi; she will be happy to help in exchange for a few weisswurst.... If you are looking for white beaches and some cleaner waters; you can also try Pulau Redang. They have direct flights from KL (Subang airport) to Redang with Berjaya Air (www.berjaya-air.com). Hope it helps and if you are looking for nice cheap food in KL; head to Jalan Petaling or Petaling Street!
